Ex-NASA Engineer Mark Rober Introduces $5M Satellite Enabling Complimentary Space Selfies

Individuals frequently seek imaginative spots for their next selfie, so why not aim for outer space? That’s precisely what former NASA engineer and popular YouTuber Mark Rober has enabled with SAT GUS. In January 2025, this satellite, which took Rober three years and $5 million to bring to life, was launched into orbit. This summer, while it circles Earth, it will capture free selfies.

Space Selfie is a venture led by Rober’s Crunch Labs in collaboration with Google Pixel and T-Mobile, allowing the public to obtain a one-of-a-kind selfie. As SAT GUS orbits Earth, it will wirelessly collect images submitted by the public via the Space Selfie website. These pictures will be displayed on a screen, so when the satellite’s camera captures a photo, you’ll have your selfie with Earth visible in the backdrop.

In a new video, Rober gives us exclusive access as he anticipates SAT GUS’ launch. Accompanied by Tim Dodd from Everyday Astronaut, Rober watches intently as SAT GUS is lifted into space by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Following the successful launch, his relief is evident when the satellite expands and takes its initial selfie.

“I’ve been a passionate dreamer for as long as I can recall,” Rober expresses at the conclusion of the video. “So a huge fist bump to all fellow dreamers out there….I’m thrilled to announce that from this moment on, taking a space selfie with SATGUS is officially free forever for anyone on this amazing planet of ours.”

The first selfies are set to return to Earth in mid-summer, and to participate, simply upload your image (at no cost) to SpaceSelfie.com.
