First-Grade Educator Organizes In-School Mock Journey to Mexico for Whole Class
Mexico’s lively culture, famous cuisine, and stunning beaches serve as major draws for American travelers. Even with its closeness, numerous individuals are unable to make the trip. To address this issue, Sonja White, a first-grade instructor at Trinity Leadership Public School in Cedar Hill, Texas, designed a virtual expedition to Mexico for her learners.
As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, White transformed her classroom into a travel adventure, equipped with DIY passports, flight tickets, and a makeshift airplane created from classroom chairs. She enriched the experience with in-flight treats, customs checkpoints, and a gift shop showcasing Mexican souvenirs. White’s inspiration stemmed from her childhood travel experiences in a military family and as a parent, as she believes that travel enhances cultural understanding and expands horizons.
Many of White’s students had never traveled beyond Dallas, motivating her to make the simulation as realistic as possible. Nathalie Vazquez, a parent from Mexico, enhanced the experience with a traditional banquet of enchiladas, tortillas, rice, and tres leches cake.
White’s endeavor caught the attention of Southwest Airlines, who invited the class to their Dallas headquarters for a tour of an airplane. The initiative resonated widely, garnering appreciation from Mexican audiences online.
Committed to immersive teaching, White often transforms her classroom into experiential learning spaces, affirming the profound effect of creative educational techniques. Follow Sonja White’s educational journey on [Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/sonjamarie/).
