Frida Kahlo Museum to Open in Mexico City

A new chapter in Frida Kahlo’s legacy is set to unfold this fall with the opening of the Museo Casa Kahlo in Mexico City. This upcoming museum aims to showcase never-before-seen artifacts from the early life of the renowned Mexican artist, including her first oil painting, early embroidery, and personal letters and jewelry. While the existing Museo Frida Kahlo at Casa Azul focuses on Kahlo’s artistic life shared with Diego Rivera, the Museo Casa Kahlo will delve into her formative years and family ties.

Casa Roja, a residence that Kahlo gifted to her sister Cristina, will now serve as the new museum. This transformation was announced by Mara Romeo Kahlo, Kahlo’s grand-niece, with assistance from their family’s Fundación Kahlo. The foundation plans to support Latin American and Indigenous art, alongside the museum’s establishment.

Despite its thematic distinction from Casa Azul, which is managed by the Mexican government, the Museo Casa Kahlo will celebrate Kahlo’s familial impact and nurture contemporary Mexican and Latin American artists. Directed by Adán García Fajardo, the museum is preparing inaugural exhibitions ahead of its September 27 opening.

As the Kahlo family seeks to preserve and expand Frida’s legacy, the museum embodies Mara’s vision of sharing unseen facets of Kahlo’s life and fostering new artistic voices, serving both as a tribute to her spirit and a beacon for future generations.
