Glasgow Mural Honors Human Rights Advocate and Emphasizes the Significance of Activism for Social Justice
Hyperrealistic Art by American Muralist JEKS ONE Arrives in Glasgow
Renowned American muralist JEKS ONE recently made his way to Glasgow to craft an impressive mural honoring Scottish activist Mary Barbour. Celebrated for his hyperrealistic approach, JEKS ONE was invited by the local arts organization Yardworks to enhance the lively street art atmosphere of the city. The mural, situated in Govan, pays tribute to Barbour’s influential role as a political activist, magistrate, and local councillor in the early 20th century.
The initiative came together rapidly, with Yardworks managing logistics, permits, and community engagement in just a week. JEKS ONE prepared two initial sketches for the mural: one showing a younger Barbour and the other illustrating her later in life. Ultimately, the design featuring her youthful image was selected, and JEKS ONE finished the mural in merely four and a half days.
The mural portrays a young woman with uplifted eyes, symbolizing hope and resolve. While there were no clear photographs of Barbour forJEKS ONE to reference, the representation embodies her unyielding spirit. A purple thistle, the national flower of Scotland, beautifies the mural, reinforcing her bond with the nation she ardently championed.
Additionally, the mural showcases a protest scene, reflecting Barbour’s pivotal role in the 1915 Glasgow rent strike. Her establishment of “Mrs Barbour’s Army” was instrumental in campaigning against unfair rent hikes. This segment of the mural underscores Barbour’s substantial influence in advocating for her community’s rights. Through perspective and composition, JEKS ONE effectively immerses viewers in a piece of historical activism.
For JEKS ONE, this mural transcends mere artistry; it serves as a heartfelt tribute with a message. “I hope it inspires the younger generation to speak out against injustices,” he conveyed. As a passionate advocate for human and civil rights, JEKS ONE seeks to establish a symbol of strength and resilience in Barbour’s honor, encouraging others to raise their voices as she did.
