Since establishing itself as an independent entity in 1986—encouraged by Steve Jobs—Pixar has launched 28 feature films. Out of these, 11 have won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, and 24 have been recorded by at least a million users on Letterboxd. With a diverse range of motivating narratives, there isn’t a singular fan favorite. Rather, each film can easily represent someone’s top choice, which can reveal a great deal about their personality. Considering this, Google Trends has tracked the most searched Pixar movie in each U.S. state.
Google gathered information from January 1, 2004—nearly six years after Google was founded and six months following the debut of Finding Nemo—until May 21, 2025. Among the 28 available titles, only five have achieved the distinction of being the most searched film within a state in the U.S. This data provides an intriguing insight into more than just film tastes. One could argue that connections exist between the cultural and historical background of a state and its preferred Pixar film.
Among the 50 states, Monsters Inc. (2001) is the champion in 24 states, predominantly in the Midwest, the West, and the South. Finding Nemo (2003)—set primarily in The Great Barrier Reef off the Australian east coast—takes second place with 10 states, encompassing several coastal regions like New England, Florida, Hawai’i, and Louisiana.
The Incredibles (2004) holds third place as the most searched film in nine states, including Alaska and states in the northwestern region. Toy Story (1995) leads in four states, including New York, while Coco (2017), the sole film from the last two decades on the list, dominates California, New Mexico, and Texas, likely due to its touching representation of Mexican culture.
If you want to revisit your home state’s favorite or explore what’s cherished in your preferred location, all of these films are available on Disney+. For something new, you can watch Elio, Pixar’s 29th feature film, hitting theaters on June 20, 2025.
