Influential Protest Banners from ‘No Kings Day’ Demonstrations

On June 14, a multitude gathered throughout the United States to take part in “No Kings Day.” This widespread demonstration, arranged in response to an increasingly authoritarian regime and immigration enforcement, transpired in over 2,000 cities and towns across all 50 states. The protests also coincided with President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday and the U.S. Army’s 250th Anniversary Parade.

Larger gatherings in New York and Los Angeles attracted estimated crowds of 50,000 and 20,000 individuals, respectively, with organizers projecting that more than 5 million attendees participated both in the U.S. and internationally. This marks it as the third-largest single-day protest in U.S. history. “No Kings” also follows recent confrontations in Los Angeles, where President Trump deployed the National Guard to disperse peaceful protests against ICE.

During a prominent event in Philadelphia, demonstrator Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, spoke with CNN regarding her motivation to attend. “On this day, when we honor the flag and celebrate America, we are standing up for democracy,” she stated. “The consistent thread in America is that the people are governed not by a king, nor a tyrant, nor nobility, but by the public.”

Additionally, some expressed dissatisfaction with the funds allocated for the Army parade, which burdened taxpayers with an estimated cost of $45 million.

“We need that funding redirected elsewhere,” Renee Hall-George, a social worker who participated in a protest in Atlanta, conveyed to CNN. “What about supporting education? What about providing meals? What about ensuring health care?”

Coordinated by Indivisible along with a coalition of progressive groups such as The Third Act Movement and the American Civil Liberties Union, the day served as an opportunity for individuals to unite and express their viewpoints.
