Rainbow Tunnel Guides Guests Into Tomorrow in Tokyo

Artist Emmanuelle Moureaux has introduced her vibrant artwork to Tokyo with her 53rd 100 Colors installation at the innovative Takanawa Gateway City. Serving as an entrance to welcome individuals into the new urban development, 100 Colors Path propels visitors into the future through 100 vertical color lines, each marked with a year ranging from 2025 to 2124.

Though this emphasis on the flow of time is characteristic of Moureaux’s artworks, it feels especially fitting in this context. Created by East Japan Railway Company, which also sponsored the installation, this recently inaugurated complex in Tokyo’s Minato ward merges intelligent transportation, robotics, sustainable energy, and a startup ecosystem. Robotic avatars, contactless AI assistants, and pod vehicles transporting pedestrians represent just a few of its distinctive attributes.

Made up of 2,400 lines evenly distributed, they form a lively installation as they intertwine and fade away while guests traverse the area. Moureaux acknowledges the unpredictability of time and how various paths appear based on our movement choices. Fluid and constantly shifting, the installation transforms in unforeseen ways just as the future is bound to reveal itself.

Alongside the primary installation, Moureaux enriched other sections with rainbow accents. Not only did she craft graphic designs for the north and south ticket gates of Takanawa Gateway Station, but she also created street banners. Moreover, in alignment with the technological aspect, an AR experience named 100 Colors City enables visitors to delve into the realm of 100 Colors using their smartphones.

100 Colors Path is a fresh installation by the French-born, Tokyo-based architect Emmanuelle Moureaux. Consisting of 2,400 vertical lines in 100 shades, each color is inscribed with a year from 2025 to 2124. The piece acts as an entryway into the newly established Takanawa Gateway City. Fluid and ever-evolving, the installation transforms in unpredictable manners just as the future is destined to do. Additionally, Moureaux enhanced other areas with rainbow elements.
