Exploring Design Processes: Exhibition at Pratt Manhattan Gallery

**Process in Practice: Celebrating the Multifaceted Journeys of Design at Pratt Manhattan Gallery**

The latest exhibition at Pratt Manhattan Gallery, titled “Process in Practice,” offers a deep dive into the intricate pathways of design. Opening on Friday, June 27, the exhibit features the work of distinguished alumni from Pratt Institute’s Communication Design programs—both graduate and undergraduate. This showcase invites visitors to delve into the unseen steps that lead to finished design pieces.

Curated by experts Ginger Gregg Duggan and Judith Hoos Fox of c2-curatorsquared, with exhibition design by Pratt alumna Aryn Beitz, “Process in Practice” challenges the notion of design as a mere visual end product. Instead, it highlights the crucial roles of research, experimentation, iteration, and innovation in the creative process. The exhibition aims to reveal both the complexity inherent in design and the diverse practices that define the field today.

“By asking designers to present the development of a project rather than just the outcome, we sought to emphasize the dynamic problem-solving and layered storytelling that design entails,” remarked Duggan and Fox.

The featured alumni in “Process in Practice” represent a wide array of design potentials, covering areas from branding and type design to social impact work and fine art. Their works traverse various disciplines and geographies, including public art installations in New York, children’s book illustrations in Mexico, typeface innovation in Bangkok, and advancements in sustainable publishing and user experience design.

Participants in the exhibition include Aryn Beitz, Joseph Cuillier III, Vincent Drayne, David Good, Beatriz Gutiérrez Hernández, Xinyi Li, Kadir Nelson, Snigdha Pamula, the design collective Partner & Partners, Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya, Stefan Sagmeister, and Anuthin Wongsunkakon.

A collaborative effort between Pratt’s Communications Design department, led by chairs Meta Newhouse and Gaia Hwang, and the Department of Exhibitions, this exhibition underscores the Institute’s commitment to championing design as a catalyst for positive change and nurturing education to empower creative leaders.

“Process in Practice” will be on display at Pratt Manhattan Gallery from June 27 to September 6, with a public opening reception on Thursday, June 26, from 6 to 8 pm. Visitors can explore the exhibition at 144 West 14th Street, New York, NY 10011, from 11 am to 6 pm, Monday to Saturday.
