Projection Mapping Transforms Monumental Sculpture into a Living Experience After Dark
South African artist Daniel Popper has debuted an impressive artistic monument in Miami’s Arts District, named “Lumen.” This monumental sculpture acts as the gateway to Society Wynwood, a vibrant apartment community. It is embellished with mosaic tiles that unveil their true enchantment when illuminated at night. By daylight, the artwork exhibits an earth-toned finish, but as night descends, projection mapping dramatically transforms the mosaics. The sculpture is then surrounded by a lively, shifting digital spectacle, with its surface appearing chrome and iridescent hues adorning its eyelids.
Rising 30 feet high, “Lumen” integrates organic, vine-like motifs that signify the “hidden channels of energy within the city.” The name, taken from the Latin word for “an opening,” alludes to the inner area of a tube, such as an artery, making it a suitable homage to Miami’s vibrant culture and the spirited energy of its inhabitants.
Popper shared his enthusiasm for enriching Wynwood’s art landscape, highlighting that “Lumen” enabled him to delve deeper into mosaics as a medium to engage people with human nature by drawing attention to the present moment through handcrafted textures.
Guests can witness “Lumen” at Society Wynwood, situated at 2431 NW 2nd Ave, Miami.
In addition, a variant of “Lumen” was showcased at Electric Forest 2025 in Rothbury, Michigan, demonstrating the mesmerizing projection mapping in action.
