Indoor Art Installation Utilizes Thread to Generate Luminous String Rainbows
Artist Gabriel Dawe is celebrated for his captivating indoor rainbows formed by the complex interaction of light and color. Continuing his stunning Plexus series, he has recently launched Plexus no. 46 as part of the Transparent Architectures (Architteture Trasparenti) group exhibition at Villa Manin in Italy, alongside prominent artists such as Christina Kubisch, Robert Irwin, Pat White, and Jeppe Hein.
Dawe’s Plexus works employ a complete range of colors, creating a spellbinding choreography of light and perceived hues. Fine threads are meticulously stretched across partially enclosed areas, interlacing to generate new shades through optical blending. As light engages with the threads, the arrangement evolves into a unified, awe-inspiring creation that radiates happiness.
Transparent Architectures delves into modern art through the notion of borders — as both geographical delineations and abstract mental realms. Dawe’s artwork resonates with this idea, encouraging viewers to conceptually navigate Plexus no. 46, even if tangible interaction remains constrained.
The Plexus series originated as a branch of Dawe’s embroidery work, experimenting with thread on a structural basis. He noted similarities between garments and edifices in their fundamental protective roles, highlighting a spiritual refuge that emerges when the thread transcends its initial purpose and dimension.
Plexus no. 46 can be viewed at Villa Manin until October 26, 2025. The site is a historic palace located near Venice, formerly the residence of the Venetian Republic’s last Doge and a brief lodging for Napoleon during a pivotal peace discussion.
