Baltimore Community Unites in Support of Beloved Family Physician Fighting Cancer
For the last four decades, Dr. Michael Zollicoffer—fondly referred to as Dr. Z by those he treats—has committed himself to the care of individuals in Baltimore’s most neglected areas. Regardless of their ability to pay, he has always welcomed everyone, motivated by his genuine passion for aiding others. Sadly, the 66-year-old family doctor recently found himself in the role of a patient after being diagnosed with two forms of cancer—renal and rectal.
In conjunction with his diagnoses, Zollicoffer discovered that he lacked insurance due to a complication with his Medicare documentation. He faced a significant obstacle in funding the radiation treatments he urgently required, which were estimated at approximately $150,000. Fortunately, a high school friend of his, Michael Haynie, launched a GoFundMe campaign, prompting his community to rally in support.
Within a brief period, over 3,400 individuals contributed to assist Zollicoffer, amassing more than $280,000 to provide him with support during this challenging time. Many contributors reflected their appreciation for Zollicoffer’s generosity throughout the years. One donor who contributed $1,000 remarked, “I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for all the care, compassion, and dedication you have shown to my son. Your kindness and patience have made such a difference in our lives, and we are incredibly fortunate to have you as his doctor.” Another supporter noted, “Dr. Z, you’ve motivated me to give back. You’ve genuinely restored my faith in humanity.”
Zollicoffer has received the necessary treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. Additionally, his insurance has been restored, and he intends to utilize any remaining funds from the crowdfunding effort to give back to the community.
“You know what, I’m going to say something that may seem crazy as heck,” Zollicoffer expressed. “I’m grateful that I got cancer, because I am the happiest man on the planet, irrespective of the result. What we have demonstrated, and why we’re gathered at this table right now, is to show America: this is what you’re about! We are about giving! I can’t succeed without them, nor can they succeed without me.”
