Interview: Brooklyn Resident’s Ten-Year Journey to Enrich Community through Street Art

Born and raised in Bushwick, Joe Ficalora has redefined his neighborhood, crafting it into an open-air art museum through a project he refers to as the [Bushwick Collective](https://www.instagram.com/thebushwickcollective/). However, Ficalora is far from a conventional art curator. In reality, one might label him as an unintentional art curator who has, in a positive light, utilized his personal sorrow to transform his surroundings.

In 2011, following the loss of his mother after a harrowing battle with brain cancer, Ficalora was in search of change. Dismayed by the [graffiti](https://mymodernmet.com/graffiti-art)-adorned walls that surrounded him, he and a cousin took it upon themselves to paint a wall white, only for it to be tagged within six hours. Disheartened by this turn of events, he began to look online for [street artists](https://mymodernmet.com/street-artists) who could beautify the walls with their artistry. Despite lacking connections or experience in the art scene, he took a leap of faith and reached out to several artists to join him in painting. Thus, in June 2012, the Bushwick Collective came to life.

Over the last 13 years, Ficalora’s personal endeavor has transformed Bushwick and attracted top local and international talent. From iconic street artists like Blek le Rat and Jef Aerosol to My Modern Met favorites Dasic and Alice Pasquini, many have left their imprint on Bushwick’s walls.

What sets the Bushwick Collective apart in the realm of street art initiatives is its extensive vision, which transcends mere aesthetics of the completed pieces. Ficalora is deeply invested in ensuring that anyone who contributes their art to the neighborhood comprehends its history and is enthusiastic about being part of the community. Additionally, an annual block party each year brings this community together in large numbers—a stark contrast to Ficalora’s childhood in the 90s, when he wasn’t permitted to play outside for safety reasons.

My Modern Met had the opportunity to discuss with Ficalora the history of the Bushwick Collective and his vision for its future.

**How did you realize that the Bushwick Collective was genuinely gaining traction?**

I didn’t realize; I simply continued because it alleviated some of the pain from my loss and the absence of my mother. People, including family, began to unite, and it became my form of therapy. It was around three years in when I understood that I held a larger responsibility to others who have been touched and inspired by this project.

**How has it influenced or made a difference in the community?**

It has unified people from all over the world and created a haven for those who are passionate about their pursuits in life, not just artists….but also volunteers, attorneys, doctors, marketing professionals, photographers, and families. Just last week, I received messages inquiring about our annual event so they could coordinate their family trips to America around it. It serves as a platform for everyone to engage in what they love and offer more of themselves than they take.

**A decade on, how has the Bushwick Collective progressed?**

It has developed organically due to the contributions of all the individuals and hearts that have joined this family. Bushwick Collective possesses its own spirit and has matured over the years. Life revolves around evolving and improving each day we are fortunate enough to be here.

**What is your current method for selecting participating artists?**

You need to be committed to your art, passionate, and an all-around good person. Life is far too brief not to give it your best!

**What do you envision for the future of the Bushwick Collective?**

I never intended this, and similar to life, none of us can predict what lies ahead. I will continue to remain true to my passion for this project and the wonderful individuals who have helped shape it and assist me in putting my broken heart back together.

**How has this entire experience personally affected you?**

In countless ways, to the extent that I wish for it to endure, even after I am gone and unable to continue. It has allowed me to comprehend my mother’s journey, appreciate what is genuinely important, and be inspired by a multitude of amazing individuals (artists, Bushwick KiDs Collective, journalists, volunteers, supporters, sculptors, business professionals, musicians, rappers, DJs, producers, videographers, families, young artists, and many more). Last year, a young artist traveled all the way from London to perform for us in an effort to get on stage for the Bushwick Collective Block Party. This is merely one instance of the inspiration and impact that this platform has fostered.
