Artist Reinvents Famous Art Pieces with LEGO Blocks That Resemble Digital Pixels

Since their debut in 1949, LEGO bricks have been utilized in numerous creative capacities, transcending their initial function. Mexican artist Gerardo Pontiérr is one individual who takes these vibrant plastic pieces and converts them into something remarkable. He reinterprets renowned paintings and portraits as three-dimensional, pixelated creations composed of thousands of LEGO bricks.

Pontiérr employs LEGO in a manner similar to how a 20th-century Pointillism artist applied paint—except here, each minute dab of hue is a single, carefully positioned brick. Up close, the distinct LEGO bricks look like simple color blocks, and the image may appear abstract. Yet, as you step back, the complete picture becomes apparent, with each brick serving as a pixel in a digital image, merging with others to create intricate, unified artwork.

Pontiérr’s three-dimensional creations are captivating from every viewpoint. When observed from the side, the different heights of the LEGO “pixels” mimic a tightly packed urban landscape, contributing depth and dimension to the artwork. The artist also incorporates thoughtful elements in each piece, such as in his depiction of Vincent van Gogh, where mini LEGO versions of Starry Night and Sunflowers are subtly integrated into the 3D mosaic.

“After over 30 years of engagement, I’m continually fascinated by how each piece can transform into anything,” Pontiérr shares with My Modern Met. “Today, I perceive LEGO as a three-dimensional visual language—a wordless mode of expression embraced globally that communicates with both children and adults through its shapes, colors, and limitless potential.” The artist further comments, “It’s a medium where precision, creativity, and freedom unite to build worlds within your reach.”
