In Japan, You Can Employ a “Grandma” to Master Cooking and End a Relationship with a Boyfriend
In Japan, the increasing number of elderly individuals and a rising count of seniors still participating in the workforce have spawned creative approaches to assist older adults. As reported by Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, in 2023, there were 9.1 million employees aged 65 and older, indicating that one in four seniors kept working, frequently to bolster their pensions. This situation can prove particularly difficult for older women, many of whom have limited higher education or broad work experience.
To tackle this issue, a unique program known as OK Obaachan, which translates to “Ok granny,” has been introduced, enabling individuals to hire a grandma for an hourly payment. This service is operated by Client Partners, a firm committed to sourcing job opportunities for women of varying ages and abilities. It features a team of approximately a hundred women aged between 60 to 94, whose primary qualification is their life experience.
Client Partners highlights the significance of older adults adding value to society, claiming that their expertise greatly benefits communities. The array of services provided by the grandmas is extensive, ranging from teaching household duties and babysitting to offering companionship and sharing life advice. Clients have sought grandmas for specific purposes: mediating familial conflicts, assisting in ending relationships, supporting new mothers, and even encouraging at sports events.
OK Obaachan sets an hourly fee of ¥3,300 ($22.48), along with an additional travel expense, ensuring that payment aligns with the respect for the grandmas’ expertise and experience. The ideal candidates for this position are characterized as compassionate, open-minded, and understanding, traits that enhance their effectiveness. Participants in the initiative frequently report rejuvenated feelings of purpose and satisfaction from their interactions.
In conclusion, OK Obaachan not only creates an imaginative avenue for seniors to stay engaged but also enriches lives through the unique strengths and affection that grandmothers offer.
