Portuguese street artist Alexandre Farto, who goes by the name Vhils, has received recognition for his unique method of drilling portraits into wall surfaces. His journey is now honored with a significant exhibition at the Museum of Urban and Contemporary Art (MUCA) in Munich. The show, entitled “Strata,” provides an extensive overview of Vhils’ artistic evolution over the last twenty years.
From his renowned “Scratching the Surfaces” collection, which features carving urban scenes into portraits, to expansive installations and mixed-media endeavors, the exhibition highlights his adaptability. It showcases early pieces along with works that have never been exhibited, offering a fascinating perspective on Vhils’ artistic growth.
The name “Strata” aptly describes the concept of various layers, a theme evident in Vhils’ artwork, which reveals layers of the urban landscape by cutting through billboards or plaster sections. Attendees can expect an engaging experience, featuring textures, layers, and materials such as concrete, wood, metal, paper, and video installations. Personal archival materials weave a compelling narrative that resonates deeply with viewers.
“Strata” is on view at MUCA until November 30, 2025, making it a must-see for enthusiasts of contemporary urban art.
