Chimpanzee Meets Again and Hugs Rescuer
The deeper we delve into understanding chimpanzees, the clearer it becomes how similar they are to us. We possess 98% of our genetic material in common with chimps, and if you seek evidence, this popular video may just persuade you. It showcases a chimp named Citron reuniting with an old companion—his savior, Fabrice “Fiston” Moudoungue.
When Citron was a mere infant, his parents were unfortunately slain by poachers, leading to his capture for sale in the unlawful wildlife market. Thankfully, he was saved by Papaye International, an organization based in Cameroon that specializes in the rescue of orphaned chimpanzees. After their rescue, these animals find refuge on island sanctuaries in Douala Edéa Natural Park.
Citron arrived at the sanctuary frightened and hurt, yet Fiston dedicated himself to restoring him to health. Nowadays, the now-grown chimpanzee resides with other chimps on the safeguarded island sanctuary, where they can wander freely and establish families of their own.
Marylin Pons Riffet, the president of Papaye International, disclosed that Fiston is the longest-serving caregiver and knows each chimpanzee under the organization’s protection. “Citron is very fond of him,” she stated. “His companion has cared for him, cherished him, honored him, and given him a chance to lead a dignified life and a peaceful future.”
The bond of affection and respect between Citron and Fiston radiates in the footage of their touching reunion. Fiston, who occasionally makes trips to the chimps’ area with food, crossed the river to visit Citron. Initially, Citron seemed disinterested in the bananas Fiston had brought; his priority was obtaining a hug. They shared a warm embrace that conveyed everything. After finally accepting the food, Citron even offered Fiston a brief handshake before returning to his group.
“Every day, we strive to provide them with a dignified, liberated, and respectful future,” Papaye International remarked in the caption of the video. “A future where young chimpanzees will not have their childhoods taken from them. A future where we will always remember that acknowledging the humanity in others is the starting point of our own humanity.”
