Photographer’s Unforgettable Encounter with Infamous Grizzly Bear “The Boss”
Canada’s Banff National Park is famous for its stunning landscapes and a variety of wildlife, including species such as elk, wolves, and the powerful grizzly bear. Among these impressive animals is a particularly legendary grizzly referred to as “The Boss.” Believed to be in his mid-twenties, The Boss is distinguished by his enormous size, estimated to weigh between 600 and 700 pounds, and his unique look, characterized by a missing section of his ear. His dominance in the park is clear, as he is said to have fathered 70% of the grizzly cubs in the Bow Valley.
In late 2022, The Boss attracted significant attention due to a series of remarkable photographs taken by Jason Leo Bantle, a wildlife photographer committed to conservation efforts. Bantle’s meeting with The Boss came after he traced fresh bear tracks in the snow, which led him to the bear’s resting spot. He patiently waited over 300 feet away, capturing a few iconic shots as The Boss returned from his search for food.
More than just a powerful figure in the park’s ecosystem, The Boss embodies resilience, thriving in an area where human activities frequently affect wildlife survival. Renowned for his preference for meat from animals hit by trains, his cunning further solidifies his status as one of Banff’s most intimidating grizzlies.
Bantle continues to track The Boss, utilizing his photography to highlight the importance of wildlife conservation and the need for respectful human engagement with nature. Through social media platforms like Instagram, he shares advice on how to safely experience national parks while telling stories like that of The Boss’s, with the goal of promoting a greater appreciation and understanding of these essential ecosystems.
