Discover a Unique Malaysian Buddhist Temple Showcasing One of the Tallest Pagodas Globally
When the topic of remarkable pagodas arises, places like China or Thailand might spring to mind, but you might be surprised to learn that Malaysia is home to one of the largest pagodas in the world. Situated in a valley on the fringe of Ipoh, the Enlightenment Heart Buddhist Temple spans over 12 acres. At its center stands a 13-story pagoda, reaching a height of 236 feet, that captivates both inside and out.
Thanks to vlogger London Liu, we have a unique glimpse into this stunning edifice and the Tibetan Buddhist Temple complex that originated in 1976. Her video exploration of the Enlightenment Heart Buddhist Temple reveals the structure’s airy and illuminated interior, featuring towering columns that, as she describes, “rise like stilts elevating the heavens.”
Liu then ascends to the eighth floor to highlight the magnificent golden Buddha statue positioned before a wall of windows overlooking the valley. Remarkably, this extraordinary complex was initiated by a single individual: Ge Li Rinpoche. Previously known as Yong Sifu, he abandoned his comfortable existence at home to delve into Nyingma Tibetan Buddhism. In a twist of fate, the driver assigned to return Liu to the city nonchalantly shared that Rinpoche was his neighbor.
The surroundings of the pagoda are equally captivating. Prayer wheels, flags, and over 200 intricate carvings and sculptures adorn the complex. Mostly, these features follow a color palette that, according to one blogger, honors the four elements: yellow (earth), green (water), red (fire), white (air), and blue (sky).
Anyone visiting the historical city of Ipoh should take the time to visit the temple complex, which is typically peaceful except during particular holidays. Its peak attendance occurs on Wesak Day, a public holiday in Malaysia (generally celebrated in late May or early June) when Buddhists in Malaysia commemorate the birth, enlightenment, and death of Buddha.
