Rothko’s Former Home and Studio Available for Purchase at $9.5M
Mark Rothko’s former apartment and studio in Lenox Hill, Manhattan, is again up for sale, with Sotheby’s Realty listing the historic red-brick building at $9.5 million. Originally a carriage house built in 1884, it became Rothko’s creative space in the 1960s, where he painted works for the famed Rothko Chapel in Houston. The studio’s design, featuring a skylight and a pulley system for large canvases, influenced the chapel’s architectural elements. The artist also created his “Untitled (Black on Grey)” series here, his last before his passing in 1970. The property, once a haven for Rothko’s artistic expressions, offers a blend of historical and modern features, including a tea room and rooftop terrace, and is partially occupied by a Japanese tea nonprofit. However, only the private residence is for sale, with potential for full ownership through a tenant buyout clause.
