Artist Creates Ephemeral Earth Murals on Iceland’s Striking Terrain

In a remarkable comeback, artist David Popa has enthralled audiences with his latest endeavor, “Fire & Ice,” after a six-month break from Instagram. Residing in Finland, Popa traveled to Iceland in June to craft two temporary earth murals that reflect the stunning beauty of the land’s vibrant landscape. Utilizing natural materials like chalk and charcoal, these creations honor Iceland’s famous volcanoes and glaciers.

The first mural, “Born of Fire,” is situated on an expansive, hardened lava field. This piece holds deep significance for Popa as it revisits a vision he has had since childhood—depicting a person intertwined with the earth, representing renewal and a return to beginnings. For Popa, the creation of this artwork was a reconnection with nature and creativity beyond commercial interests, signifying a return to the fundamental source of his artistic inspiration.

For the “ice” part of his project, Popa carefully chose a site on the Vatnajökul ice cap to bring “Surrender” to life. This artwork showcases a woman’s face subtly rising from the glacier’s surface, sketched with precise charcoal lines. The challenge with this piece was to produce an image that appeared to emerge from the ice itself. Success was confirmed only after drone footage unveiled the true essence of his vision.
