Adobe’s Digital Outfit Captivates with Lively Design and Hue Transformations


If you’re someone who dislikes wearing the same outfit repeatedly, you can thank Adobe. In 2023, the tech powerhouse unveiled Project Primrose, a digital dress that guarantees you’ll have something fresh to sport. With its color-changing and pattern-shifting abilities, the dress represents not only wearable technology but also wearable artistry.

Project Primrose was first showcased at Adobe MAX 2023, donned by Christine Dierk, one of the main figures behind its creation. Dierk, a graduate student from UC Berkeley specializing in wearable technologies, was approached by Adobe for her expertise. She started as an intern and became part of the research team responsible for prototyping and developing the dress.

The creation of the digital dress demanded the sewing prowess and technical skills that Dierk possessed. In total, 1,182 individual petals, each glimmering like sequins, were meticulously hand-sewn onto the garment. Additionally, the 74 driver boards that powered the dress also required hand sewing.

“The petals posed a geometric challenge. To fit the dress’s shape, we had to use broader petals where the dress was wider and slimmer petals in more constricted areas. We designed 16 distinct sizes to maintain a cohesive look,” Dierk explained. “Then, we established a petal-by-petal layout using Illustrator. Attaching them was akin to a paint-by-number venture.”

When Dierk took the stage and began transforming her dress, the audience at Adobe MAX erupted with excitement. Shifting from silver to a deep gray and back again, the dress rapidly metamorphosed before spectators’ eyes. Various patterns emerged, seemingly moving in sync with Dierk as she turned from side to side.

Shortly after Adobe MAX, clips of Project Primrose spread across the internet and quickly gained viral status. Though it felt strange for Dierk to see her face circulating on TikTok and Instagram, she recognized it as a testament to their achievement.

“I hope the main message is that fashion isn’t limited to static forms—it can be dynamic and engaging,” she noted. “I wish it motivates individuals in technology and fashion design, as well as anyone involved in making.”

Progressing into 2024, Project Primrose continued to advance and even graced the runway during New York Fashion Week, courtesy of a partnership with Christian Cowan. While there haven’t been updates in 2025, the digital dress remains a viral sensation that transformed the global perspective on fashion and technology.
