New Chihuly Glass Art Show Launches at Kentucky Distillery, Fusing Bourbon and Glassblowing
**Emerging from the Undulating Fields of Loretto, KY: Dale Chihuly’s Latest Exhibition at Star Hill Farm**
Emerging from the undulating fields of Loretto, Ky., is a vibrant collection of glass artworks. Some feature a rich blue hue, reaching high into the sky; others meander through the air with their orange tendrils and yellow swirls. This whimsical and unusual ensemble constitutes Dale Chihuly’s latest exhibition at Star Hill Farm, the residence of the Kentucky bourbon brand Maker’s Mark.
Encompassing nine unique installations, the *Chihuly x Maker’s Mark* collaboration spans both the interior and exterior of the distillery. Outdoors, Chihuly’s artworks serve as striking focal points within an otherwise tranquil landscape, accentuating the site’s lush foliage and expansive views. The feeling is akin inside, where unconventional pieces hang from cellar ceilings, illuminating the dim environment and enriching its vibrancy.
Chihuly’s dynamic sculptures are captivating enough to seize a visitor’s gaze, inevitably attracting attention with their surprising forms and subtle colors. Nevertheless, the exhibition is not merely loud or striking. It also thoughtfully responds to the encompassing space.
“I drew heavily from the landscape and architecture of the campus,” Chihuly commented in a recent statement.
Perhaps nothing exemplifies this more than *Sapphire and Platinum Waterdrop Tower*, an impressive 12-foot sculpture inspired by the natural watershed at Star Hill Farm. When viewed from specific angles, the sculpture harmoniously integrates with the trees behind it, its blue tentacles curling and contorting just as branches do. In another area, logs are penetrated by crimson arrows, generating a graphic sense of motion, as though the wood is being cut and toppled into the grass once more.
The partnership between Maker’s Mark and Chihuly is intentional and not their first collaboration (their alliance has persisted for the past decade). Chihuly’s artworks are entirely handmade, demanding commitment, creativity, and meticulousness. These elements, according to Maker’s Mark, align perfectly with the way the brand produces its bourbon. Here, glassblowing and distilling are considered as one unified process.
“Our collaboration with Chihuly captures [our] delightfully unreasonable spirit,” Rob Samuels, managing director of Maker’s Mark and an eighth-generation whisky producer, states. “This exhibition, influenced by nature and Chihuly’s creativity, emphasizes our vision to make Star Hill Farm the most endearing, culturally rich, and environmentally conscious homeplace in the world.”
