New York Foundation for the Arts Employees Initiate Unionization Effort

Workers at the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) have announced their intent to unionize, seeking to address issues such as transparency and wage levels within the organization. The new NYFA Union aims to join United Auto Workers Local 2110, which already represents numerous art institutions across New York City. NYFA, founded in 1971, provides extensive support to artists and cultural workers, having distributed $55 million to nearly 1,000 artists. The unionization effort is driven by the desire for more collective bargaining power concerning workplace conditions and economic terms, reflecting a broader trend of unionization in nonprofit sectors influenced by the political climate. The union seeks either voluntary recognition from NYFA or will proceed with a petition for an election filed with the National Labor Relations Board.
