Non-Profit Breathes New Life into Pioneer Square in Seattle through Public Art Projects

For more than ten years, the Forest for the Trees has been redefining the visual environment of the Pacific Northwest through artistic expression. This non-profit has teamed up with 150 artists from both local and international backgrounds to enrich Seattle’s public art landscape. In July, they hosted their yearly event, inviting 23 artists to design panels that enliven the area surrounding Pioneer Square.

Numerous panels can be seen in Railspur Alley, infusing vibrant visual energy into a region currently undergoing urban renewal. RailSpur, a new micro-district in Pioneer Square, comprises three historic brick and timber warehouses being developed by Urban Villages. The developers aim to invigorate the alleyways that encircle it as spaces for community gathering. Public art, always central to urban advancements, helps generate interest in these once-neglected locales.

Notable works include David Rice’s dual-portrait of a woman, perfectly suited for the surrounding ambiance as she appears prepared for a rainy day. By merging hyperrealistic figurative elements with abstract nuances and vivid colors, Rice’s panel stands out against the stone backdrop. Yi Du’s ethereal panel represents a shift for the artist, who typically works on a smaller scale. She has skillfully adapted her technique to produce a piece that radiates calmness.

For these creators, collaborating with Forest for the Trees provides an opportunity to attract new audiences who might not visit the galleries where their work is often showcased. And for Forest for the Trees, the artwork serves as a cultural connector and invites individuals to engage with neighborhoods like Pioneer Square from a fresh perspective.

For those planning a trip to Seattle and wishing to stay in Pioneer Square, consider Populus Seattle, a new boutique hotel located in the heart of the district.
