Northern Cheyenne Artist Bently Spang Showcases Performance at Zimmerli Art Museum

On Sunday, October 12, from 11am to 3pm, Northern Cheyenne artist Bently Spang will present Tekcno Powwow Jr.2: To the Second Power at Rutgers’ Voorhees Mall in New Brunswick, New Jersey. This free, public event is part of Spang’s Tekcno Powwow series, blending powwow traditions with modern cultural expressions like breakdancing and hip-hop to explore artistic influences. Spang challenges stereotypes and myths about Native peoples using various media forms. This event coincides with the Zimmerli Art Museum’s exhibition, Indigenous Identities: Here, Now & Always, curated by the late Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. As the largest showcase of contemporary Native American art, it features 97 artists from over 74 Indigenous nations, highlighting Indigenous identity’s role in contemporary art. The Zimmerli’s initiatives are supported by Rutgers University, the Avenir Endowment Fund, the Andrew W. Mellon Endowment Fund, and others. Generous support for bilingual text is provided by the Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program, with additional grants from the Middlesex County Board of County Commissioners.
