
Italy’s ‘Tiramisù World Championship’ Aims to Find the Top Amateur Tiramisu Bakers Globally
Tiramisu ranks among the most cherished desserts globally. Its allure starts with its name—“tiramisu” translates to “pick me up” in Italian. It is no surprise that numerous restaurants and coffee shops worldwide feature it on their menus, leading many individuals to attempt making it themselves. To discover the finest tiramisu, a distinctive contest known as the Tiramisù World Cup is held in Italy each year.
This exceptional competition is open to amateur cooks globally. Consequently, it excludes any culinary professionals, and there are specific criteria to identify who qualifies as a professional. This means that anyone who has worked in a professional kitchen or a pastry shop for at least six months or has operated a home-based food business is ineligible. This event is focused on amateur bakers who have mastered this delicacy in their home kitchens.
The competition is conducted in the Piazza Borsa, the Stock Exchange Square in Treviso, which is believed to be the origin of tiramisu. Participants from all corners of the globe can register, but they are responsible for their own travel expenses. Judges assess the technical execution, visual appeal, flavor intensity, plate balance, taste, and overall harmony, assigning points for each category.
The contest features two divisions: Original recipe and Creative recipe. In the Original recipe category, contestants are provided with all six ingredients from the same suppliers and are required to use all: ladyfingers, mascarpone, eggs (the yolk is compulsory; the egg white is optional), coffee, cocoa, and granulated sugar. In this case, the appeal of each ingredient lies not in its flavor but rather in the technique and proportions applied.
In the Creative recipe division, participants may incorporate up to three additional ingredients, which must either arrive in sealed packages or, if fresh, be submitted to the Fresh Ingredient Box within 30 minutes of purchase. Decorations are permitted but should be made exclusively from the ingredients used.
This year, the Tiramisù World Cup will occur from October 10-12, with both the semifinal and final scheduled for the final day. Competitor spots are already full; however, if you wish to partake in the excitement, there is still an option to join. The Tiramisù World Cup provides an Overmisù ticket, functioning as a waitlist. If a competitor fails to appear, you might have the chance to step in. For those interested in observing these bakers in action, entry to the contest is free until the venue reaches capacity.
