Japanese Bakery Transforms Hokusai’s Renowned Artwork into Macarons and Sweets

Tokyo-based bakery Katanukiya has revealed the introduction of two limited-time desserts inspired by Hokusai’s renowned woodblock prints, especially from the “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji” collection. This new initiative, named “Little Views of Mount Fuji,” ingeniously turns German Baumkuchen and French macarons into artistic masterpieces utilizing high-resolution food printers.

The Baumkuchen is made with multiple layers of cake, each baked separately to attain the perfect texture. The uppermost layer, created with egg whites, delivers a smooth surface for the meticulous application of colors. This dessert not only features prints such as “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” “Fujimigahara Field in Owari Province,” and “Fine Wind, Clear Morning,” but also involves customers by enabling them to carve out the designs and craft a 3D edible artwork.

Furthermore, Katanukiya introduces Hokusai-inspired macarons. Breaking away from the conventional round shape, these macarons embrace an elongated form to showcase eight of Hokusai’s landscapes: including “The Great Wave off Kanagawa,” “Thunderstorm Beneath the Summit,” and “Under Mannen Bridge at Fukagawa.”

The “Little Views of Mount Fuji” series quickly sold out at Katanukiya’s Tokyo outlets. However, commencing October 15, 2025, these edible artworks will be accessible for purchase through the Katanukiya online shop. The Baumkuchen is available for ¥594 ($3.90) each, or ¥1,782 ($11.70) for a trio, while the set of eight macarons is priced at ¥1,926 ($12.64). Stay updated by following Katanukiya on Instagram for news about upcoming pop-up stores across Japan where these delicacies will be offered.
