Trenton Doyle Hancock Confronts Philip Guston: An Exhibition at Skirball Cultural Center

**Exploring Intersectional Narratives: “Draw Them In, Paint Them Out” at Skirball**

The exhibition “Draw Them In, Paint Them Out” provides a unique dialogue between the works of Philip Guston and Trenton Doyle Hancock, shedding light on the intersections of art, identity, and social justice. Curated by Rebecca Shaykin, the exhibition is on view at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles until March 1, 2026.

Philip Guston, born to Jewish immigrants in 1913, and Trenton Doyle Hancock, a prominent Black artist born in 1974, both delve into themes of evil, self-representation, and otherness. Guston’s iconic Ku Klux Klan paintings are placed in conversation with Hancock’s responses, highlighting their approach to confronting institutional power and personal complicity through art.

Despite the challenging subject matter, both artists infuse their work with a dark humor, using the language of comics to navigate pain and emotion. This exhibition offers a profound exploration of how art can challenge societal systems and invoke change. For more details, visit skirball.org.
