SVA’s MA Curatorial Practice Offers Practical Training in New York City
The MA Curatorial Practice (MACP) program is a distinguished two-year master’s degree focusing on equipping students with practical skills and techniques necessary for professional curating. Situated at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York City, students benefit from proximity to some of the world’s most esteemed museums, contemporary art galleries, artist archives, major libraries, and vibrant cultural events.
Distinctively, the program offers students multiple chances to curate fully subsidized exhibitions in diverse real-world settings rather than being limited to a singular graduation project. This approach fosters adaptability to various curatorial contexts beyond traditional museum environments.
Leveraging its NYC location, the program grants access to exceptional faculty who cover a spectrum of curating approaches through case studies, history, and theory. Workshops hone skills in writing, exhibition installation, design, lighting, conservation, presentation, and grant-writing. Core courses include art history, exhibition history, and cultural theory, ensuring comprehensive knowledge for professional expertise. Interaction with over 40 international museum directors, curators, and artists offers practical insights and networking opportunities in intimate group settings.
A subsidized trip to a major international biennial features in the curriculum, followed by an internship placement in a prominent institution’s curatorial department, providing hands-on experience in a professional setting. Students also engage with global curatorial peers in specialized sessions to broaden learning and international networking.
The program’s online journal, The Curatorial, allows students to contribute to a professional publication, enhancing their credentials for future curatorial roles. Additionally, need-based scholarships are available.
