Honoring the Craft of Color Photography: Revealing the Photo Contest Champions

AAP Magazine has praised the vibrant variety of life worldwide through its photo contest centered on colors. Reflecting on the works of 25 photographers from 16 nations across four continents, the contest illustrates how color can create captivating visual tales. Trevor Cole, an Irish photographer, secured the top position with his striking image of a Mundari man from the Ilemi Triangle, coated in ash to protect his cattle from insects. This portrait, part of his “Pastoral Peoples and Practices” series, highlights the profound connection between humans and livestock, spotlighting a lifestyle with a minimal ecological impact. Runner-up Laurin Strele captured the spirit of resilience in his vibrant portrait of Aleppo’s Abu Zakkour, distinguished by his complete yellow attire, symbolizing endurance in the face of devastation.

The contest recognized many photographers with Merit Awards for their remarkable blends of color and narrative. Notable acknowledgments include Abdelrahman Alkahlout from Palestine, who illustrated calm defiance in turmoil with his image of Palestinians praying amid ruins. Li Sun from China shared a gripping narrative on surveillance through anthropomorphized cameras, while Nazanin Alipour Jeddi from Iran/USA shed light on the hidden struggles of women’s daily lives through a blue-centric series. Images ranged from the grandeur of nature’s colors in Yuan Su’s Indonesian volcanic scenery to the cultural depth captured by Marijn Fidder with a music project in Uganda embracing inclusivity.

Vitaly Golovatyuk from Russia examined architecture’s conversation with scale, Oksana Omelchuk from Ukraine transformed floral colors into emotional expressions, and Alejandra Nowiczewski from Argentina/Italy explored the spiritual metamorphosis represented by color in Buddhist customs. These and countless other photographs address a myriad of global stories, all interwoven with color, portraying the resilience, culture, and determination of the human spirit. The complete collection invites viewers to experience the complex interaction of hue and humanity, serving as a vibrant reminder of our world’s rich tapestry of narratives.
