Ukrainian Folk Art Maintained by Breathtaking Petrykivka Creations from Artist

Drawing from her Ukrainian roots, artist Marianna Mackanych, born in Odesa and now residing in Pittsburgh, crafts dynamic folk art in the classic Petrykivka technique. Her artworks flourish with vibrant brushstrokes and vivid hues, showcasing flowers that symbolize beauty, rebirth, and strength.

“For me, Petrykivka transcends mere decoration; it represents a perspective conveyed through rhythm, movement, and life—truly the art of liberated individuals,” Mackanych shares with My Modern Met. “Through my artwork, I aspire to convey the beauty and richness of Ukrainian culture to a broader audience and aid in its preservation for generations to come.”

The Petrykivka art form originated in the 17th century within a quaint Ukrainian village sharing its name. It was woven into daily life, with individuals adorning walls, furniture, and everyday objects with vibrant floral patterns. By the 20th century, this technique transformed from mere home embellishment to artistic expressions on paper and canvas. Mackanych’s creations sustain the legacy of this traditional art, bringing the essence of Ukrainian culture to Pittsburgh and beyond.

In recent times, Petrykivka has gained formal acknowledgement as a part of Ukraine’s intangible cultural legacy and is proudly featured on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
