Des Moines Art Center Exhibition: Manuel Álvarez Bravo’s Collaborations

Manuel Álvarez Bravo is celebrated as the father of Mexican photography, renowned for his profound influence in the world of art through collaborations with notable figures from the 20th century. In the wake of the Mexican Revolution, Álvarez Bravo began his photographic journey in the vibrant art scene of 1920s Mexico City. His career, spanning seven decades, saw creative collaborations with icons such as Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, André Breton, Luis Buñuel, and Octavio Paz, among others.

The exhibition, “Manuel Álvarez Bravo: Collaborations,” showcases his collaborative spirit through over 100 photographs and ephemera, emphasizing how integral these partnerships were to his creative process. Creating a photograph involves several crucial decisions, from framing to presentation, and Álvarez Bravo frequently made these choices alongside mentors, friends, lovers, and rivals.

Curated by Mia Laufer, formerly of the Des Moines Art Center, the exhibition is on display at the Des Moines Art Center until January 18, 2026. It is supported by several art funds and is accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue featuring essays from various scholars and a poem by Octavio Paz.
