Research Reveals Pompeii’s Elite Lived in Lavish Towers

A recent study has unveiled that Pompeii’s elite may have resided in homes with tower-like features, signifying status and power. This theory is part of “Pompeii Reset,” a digital reconstruction project by the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and Humboldt University of Berlin. The hypothesis centers on the House of Thiasus, notable for its staircase possibly leading to an upper tower floor, offering views of the city and Bay of Naples. Digital simulations revealed a 39-foot structure linking a service room and dining chamber. The innovative approach aids in understanding aspects of ancient Pompeian society not accessible by traditional archaeology. Park Director Gabriel Zuchtriegel highlights digital reconstructions as crucial for exploring ancient experiences and societal structures, emphasizing their role in understanding the culture and lifestyle of Pompeii before its destruction by Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE.
