Billie Eilish Contributes $11.5 Million to Charitable Causes, Calls for Increased Donations from Billionaires

Singer Billie Eilish has consistently been a voice for the people, frequently participating in political and social advocacy. She has brought attention to the issue of climate change, urged fashion designers to abandon fur, confronted body shaming through a compelling video, and discussed women’s reproductive rights. A remarkable young woman, Eilish leverages her platform to support the causes close to her heart. At a recent awards event, surrounded by some of the wealthiest individuals on the globe, she directly addressed them, subtly criticizing their lack of action towards helping those in need.

During the WSJ Magazine’s Innovator Awards at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Eilish was honored with the Music Innovator Award. The audience included notable figures like Mark Zuckerberg and his spouse Priscilla Chan (recipient of the Philanthropy in Science Innovator Award), Hailey Bieber, Karlie Kloss, Spike Lee, George Lucas, Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, and Questlove. This influential and celebrity-filled gathering inspired the 23-year-old artist to voice her concerns.

“We’re in a time right now where the world is really, really bad and really dark, and people need empathy and help more than, kind of, ever, especially in our country,” Eilish expressed in her acceptance remarks. “I’d say if you have money, it would be great to use it for good things, maybe give it to some people that need it. Love you all, but there’s a few people in here that have a lot more money than me. If you’re a billionaire, why are you a billionaire? No hate, but yeah, give your money away, shorties.”

Leading by example, Eilish recently made a significant contribution herself. Stephen Colbert, who introduced her to the audience, had the honor of sharing the news. “Billie Eilish will be donating proceeds from her Hit Me Hard and Soft Tour to support organizations, projects, and voices dedicated to food equity, climate justice, reducing carbon pollution, and combating the climate crisis. That donation, ladies and gentlemen, will be $11.5 million. That’s wonderful. Billie, on behalf of humans everywhere, thank you,” he stated.

In the meantime, the singer is continuing the North American leg of her Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour. For this project, she partnered with REVERB to promote initiatives aimed at lowering the environmental impact of tours and concerts. These efforts include offering free water refills, encouraging public transportation use, and providing merchandise made from 100% recycled cotton.
