Responsive Canine Pays Attention to Owner’s Piano Play, Spreading Happiness

Dogs are undeniably faithful friends. As pianist Kara Mehrmann has found, they also excel at listening. While she has attracted admirers globally with her music, none are as engaged as her dog, Bradford. In Mehrmann’s clips, the dog can be spotted perched on her lap, intently listening as she skillfully maneuvers her fingers over the piano keys. Now, Bradford has garnered his own fanbase.
“People have a love for piano and dogs,” Mehrmann, a professional jazz artist and educator, stated to FOX 2. “(Bradford) brings it to another level by not howling along, like many dogs tend to do with music; he really seems to get relaxed and responds differently to various genres. It’s adorable to witness all his expressions.”
Mehrmann has referred to Bradford, a 13-year-old Westie mix, as the “world’s foremost music vibe-ologist,” due to his knack for responding to specific aspects of music. Most prominently, he is recognized for squinting when he appears to truly connect with the music, or solemnly resting his snout against the keys when a song impacts him. Jazz appears to be his preferred genre, though the pianist notes he also has a favorable response to pop and classical tunes.
Mehrmann rescued Bradford from a shelter, and he has been a “studio pup” ever since. Yet his genuine musical appreciation was revealed in 2020, during the remote music lessons her human taught. “During the pandemic, while we were teaching from home, he was with me for around 25 hours a week. He wanted to be part of it and would hop onto my lap,” Mehrmann recalls. “I randomly filmed a side video, and I captured his eyes squinting and him truly enjoying it.”
Since that time, they’ve received acclaim from musicians such as SZA and entertainment brands like Pixar. However, they remain grounded. The duo continues to joyfully perform together as Mehrmann plays covers and original pieces for their 500,000 followers.
