KAWS Reinterprets Renaissance Art with a Contemporary Edge Highlighting Dependence on Technology

In a striking fusion of Renaissance artistry and modern culture, celebrated artist and designer KAWS unveils his newest installation, “The Message,” at the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence. Drawing from Fra Angelico’s 15th-century treasure “The Annunciation,” KAWS revitalizes the legendary biblical moment featuring his trademark figures, BFF and Companion, positioned within the museum’s Renaissance courtyard.

“The Message” delves into the nature of communication in today’s digital landscape, prominently featuring mobile phones. In a contemplative echo of Angelico’s creation, KAWS orchestrates a tableau that resembles Gabriel’s holy visit to Mary, with BFF upright and Companion seated. Yet, this interaction serves as a poignant critique of modern seclusion; notwithstanding the semblance of a celestial encounter, both figures are absorbed in their phones, overlooking authentic connection.
