Interview with an Artist on a Path of Personal Exploration by Reevaluating Glitchy Patterns

Mexico City artist Alexis Mata has long been captivated by visual distortion, a concept he has investigated through various media including collage, sculpture, and installation. His work contemplates beauty and perception, providing viewers with an opportunity to explore what lies beneath the surface. Following a successful series called “Fata Morgana,” Mata returns to his origins with the new exhibition “Sublime Paraíso” at Maia Contemporary in Mexico.

“Sublime Paraíso” signifies a shift from the somber tone present in Mata’s earlier projects. Instead, it highlights themes of self-exploration and spiritual renewal by examining natural landscapes through a distorted perspective. Each artwork invites spectators to look beyond what is immediately visible and reflect on the inner sanctuary that can exist amid life’s emotional barrenness.

Mata views these works as visual poetry, where evolution and innovation are represented by flourishing cacti and meteors. The psychedelic visual style functions not as an escape from reality but as a catalyst to envision what exists beyond.

In an exclusive interview, Mata expressed his fascination with glitches and visual flaws, perceiving them as embodiments of beauty. Nonetheless, “Sublime Paraíso” signifies a pivotal moment where he shifts away from glitches towards new creative avenues.

The series explores personal themes, presenting surreal, dreamlike landscapes that embody the essence of Mata’s envisioned paradise. The artworks traverse the realms of life and death, symbolizing transformation through elements like entwined cacti and skeletons.

His creative process involves revisiting deeply rooted concepts, shaped by mystical and spiritual ideas, along with a departure from prior color schemes. Mata incorporates symbols, archetypes, and classical inspirations to enhance his intricate stories.

Mata is fascinated by oil painting, which facilitates a playful interaction with pigment and the transition from digital to tangible forms. Future ambitions include experimenting with diverse materials like stained glass, ceramics, and textiles.

Exhibiting in his homeland carries great importance for Mata, as expectations and artistic standards are substantial. The exhibition at Maia Contemporary paves the way for increased visibility, continuing Mata’s narrative as an artist perpetually eager for exploration and profound connections with his Mexican heritage.

“Sublime Paraíso” by Alexis Mata will be on display from October 25, 2025, at Maia Contemporary in Mexico City.
