Oil Paintings Capture the Timeless Essence of Australia’s Stunning Landscapes

The mountains, rivers, and forests that grace our planet have observed countless generations rise and fade, and if the earth had a voice, it would undoubtedly possess a wealth of narratives. Investigating humanity’s bond with the land—throughout history, the current moment, and what lies ahead—artist Jack Rowland, based in Melbourne, crafts lively landscapes that honor nature’s timeless allure. He has depicted various landscapes over the years, but his latest work emphasizes Australia’s expansive deserts and mountainous regions.
Rowland’s collection, called Euphorica, envisions the rugged Ikara-Flinders Ranges of South Australia as a surreal paradise. The often unforgiving landscape is portrayed in rich tones, encapsulating the vibrant energy and warmth of the region. Through his artistic creations, Rowland seeks to illustrate our spiritual ties to the natural world, referencing the concept of the “sublime.” By employing bright colors and elaborate details, he delves into the potent, nearly hallucinogenic sensation of unity with nature.
“Observing the sunset over the stunning scenery of the Ikara-Flinders Ranges, I was struck by the immense antiquity of this land,” Rowland reflects. “And how insignificant the human narratives back home can seem. This land has witnessed everything. And it will endure long after we have departed.”
In another series of oil paintings, titled Un-Earth, Rowland envisions surreal landscapes influenced by Lake Mungo, a parched lake in western New South Wales where the oldest human remains outside Africa were found. The haunting landscape of skeletal sand mounds and its profound ties to ancient history inspired Rowland to illustrate a future world after a climate crisis. His dark, cinematic vistas encourage us to envision two possible futures—one where we’ve been relegated to ancient artifacts, and another where we are exploring new realms beyond our own.
