Boy with Down Syndrome Wows with Whitney Houston Performance, Earns Applause from Whole School

Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” stands as one of the most legendary songs ever. Its immense popularity led to the creation of the “Whitney Houston Challenge.” While it may appear straightforward, it necessitates precision and focus. This is why, when a boy named Ethan, who has Down syndrome, embraced the challenge and excelled, his school friends erupted in applause.

The Whitney Houston Challenge involves striking a drum in sync with the rhythm before the exhilarating final chorus of “I Will Always Love You,” testing the participant’s timing. Accomplishing this is no simple task, as even seasoned musicians find it challenging, as evidenced by the video shared by Mexican drummer Alberto Torrescano.

“There have been false starts and near misses. Everyone seems to agree on one thing: It’s tougher than it appears,” reports The New York Times. The publication also spoke with David Foster, who produced and arranged the track, to discuss its complexity. He mentions that to inject drama into the piece, he deviated from the beat with the drums, accentuated by the reverb they captured by recording in the bathroom of the studio.

Thus, the boy’s accomplishment has resonated globally. Following his teacher’s cue, Ethan struck the drum perfectly as his classmates watched. After successfully completing the challenge, he celebrated with an exuberant high five to his educator before dashing around the school gym in a triumphant lap.

Ethan’s mother, Danielle Miranda, valued the affection shown to Ethan both within the school and from those moved by his viral moment online. “That’s my boy!!!!!” she expressed in the comments on the video shared by the school. “Thank you to the entire school and community for loving him as passionately as we do.”
