Studies Indicate Enhanced Quality of Life Through Gratitude Practices, As Reported by Researchers and Psychologists

While some individuals claim that their school days represent the pinnacle of their existence, others assert that life improves as one ages. Spanish psychologist and writer Rafael Santandreu presents a different perspective, contending that the “finest phase” of life is not linked to your age—it starts the moment you alter your mindset towards gratitude, and this can occur at any point.

“Many folks believe that the finest period of life is childhood or adolescence. But let me share something: the finest phase is when you begin to think clearly,” Santandreu states in an Instagram post (translated from Spanish). “When you cease complaining, stop dramatizing, and genuinely start to value everything you possess: your body, your freedom, your dear ones, the simple truth of being alive.” He emphasizes, “That’s when authentic happiness commences. And the wonderful part is that it isn’t determined by age. It can begin today!”

Santandreu’s hypothesis is also supported by research. Studies indicate that practicing gratitude not only boosts your mood but can also result in measurable alterations in the brain. Furthermore, according to the American Brain Foundation, cultivating gratitude can enhance your emotional resilience, assist in better eating habits, and improve sleep quality. Maintaining a more optimistic outlook can also alleviate stress, depression, and anxiety, thereby decreasing the likelihood of associated health problems.

Engaging in gratitude daily allows you to perceive your experiences through a more favorable perspective, making it easier to cherish the here and now. But how can you implement this? A straightforward method is to maintain a daily gratitude journal, dedicating a few moments to record the little things you are thankful for. Additionally, you can express gratitude externally by sending a thank-you note, email, or message to someone who has positively impacted your life. Meditation provides another effective means to foster gratitude, creating an opportunity to slow down, contemplate, and focus on what you hold dear.
