85-Year-Old Man Obtains College Degree Following 50-Year Break

As time passes, it’s common to think we’ve lost out on certain chances, but the pursuit of our dreams is never beyond reach. Roberto Fernandez, an 85-year-old, illustrates this by graduating from college recently, five decades after originally leaving to focus on family and career responsibilities. Fernandez first began his studies at Florida International University (FIU) in 1972, but after three years, he stepped away to manage an accounting business. Years later, after concentrating on family life, he chose to follow his long-desired dream. With assistance from his son, now a faculty member at FIU, they found out he needed just one more course to complete his degree.

Driven by an enduring wish to finish his education, Fernandez remarked, “It’s something I had in my mind all the time. I thought about it every day.” He took significant steps to realize this goal, and on December 16, he proudly crossed the graduation stage, earning applause from peers and educators. “I’ve been wanting to have this for 50 years,” Fernandez stated, reflecting on his achievement with pride. His experience is a compelling reminder that age does not impede one’s ability to reach their objectives.

Fernandez urges others to chase their dreams, regardless of their age. He recommends, “If you really want it, don’t give up. Do it. Because you’re going to feel so much better. I guarantee it.”
