“Thorough Photography Volume Investigates Modern Viewpoints on More Than 200 Avian Species”

This is no typical bird book. Aviary: The Bird in Contemporary Photography features 223 images from more than 50 globally recognized photographers skillfully showcasing the elegance and delicacy of birds. Displaying these avian beings in a highly stylized and deliberate fashion, it presents them as graceful, statuesque entities.

Aviary is divided into six chapters or “Acts,” categorizing the birds by genre instead of through a scientific lens. Authors Danaé Panchaud and William A. Ewing curate images across art, documentary, fashion, portraiture, ornithology, and wildlife photography. This approach transforms the book into an exploration of the connection between humans and birds. It delves into our perception of birds, as well as how they perceive and respond to us.

The diverse array of photographers contributes to this exploration; it provides the book with various viewpoints and styles, enabling the audience to experience a spectrum of emotions through the birds. For instance, Connection by Christine Ward captures a heartfelt moment between two ravens in a mesmerizing and enchanting image. Conversely, Alan Walker’s The Courtship of the Red-crowned Cranes conveys movement, portraying two cranes in an animated courtship with a more playful and joyous tone.
