Inmates Yearning for Freedom: Awaiting the Dawn of Liberation

The Bell Gallery at Brown University is showcasing “Prisoners of Love: Until the Sun of Freedom,” an exhibition by acclaimed artists Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme. Co-curated by Kate Kraczon and Thea Quiray Tagle, this exhibition presents its sole US appearance in Providence, Rhode Island, until May 31. The exhibition is rooted in interviews with former political prisoners in Palestine, exploring creative practices as means of resistance and survival against global incarceration systems. Central to the installation is the poem “Enemy of the Sun” by Samih Al-Qasim, highlighting historical solidarity between political prisoners in Palestine and the US. Commissioned by Kraczon in 2020, the project builds on a long-term partnership with the artists and includes collaboration with Brown University communities.
