The Dress Code for the 2026 Met Gala is Officially Revealed

The Met Gala, celebrated as one of the most awaited events of spring, is poised to enchant once more with its theme for 2026: “fashion is art.” This dress code not only establishes the atmosphere for its legendary red carpet but also affects the corresponding exhibition by the Costume Institute. The forthcoming gala and exhibition seek to delve into the complex relationship between artistic expressions and fashion as a tangible art form.
The exhibition, named *Costume Art*, will showcase approximately 400 pieces, featuring 200 artworks from the Met’s collection and a matching number of historical and modern garments. It will take place in the recently opened Condé M. Nast Galleries, spanning nearly 11,500 square feet.
Andrew Bolton, the curator of the Costume Institute, stresses the emphasis on the significance of the dressed body in art. He points out the necessity of perceiving fashion not only visually but as a vital component of the bodily experience. Max Hollein, the CEO of the Met, endorses this perspective, highlighting the museum’s groundbreaking approach to presenting fashion within the framework of its vast art collection.
The gala will be co-chaired by prominent figures such as Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour, with a host committee that features key personalities like Zoë Kravitz, Anthony Vaccarello, Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Misty Copeland, and others.
In prior years, themes have varied from tailoring to depictions of time. This year’s *Costume Art* will highlight remarkable combinations, such as a 2022-23 suit by Glenn Martens alongside a 1st–2nd century CE marble statue, demonstrating the fusion of contemporary and historical themes.
The exhibition will be accessible to the public starting May 10, 2026. For further details and updates, visit the Met’s website.
