Amoako Boafo’s Mobile Studio Initiative

Amoako Boafo’s “I Bring Home With Me” at Roberts Projects in Los Angeles brings a piece of Accra, Ghana, to the city, offering a tranquil contrast to the buzz of Hollywood. The exhibition features 22 portraits that connect viewers to Boafo’s world using his distinctive collaged finger trail style, including his self-portraits and embroidered works. This is Boafo’s first stateside collaboration with Glenn DeRoche from DeRoche Projects, resulting in a recreation of Boafo’s Accra studio using local materials. The space evokes a gathering place, enhancing the experience with elements like a family table, seating areas, and a poem by Yielu. Boafo paints with his fingers, creating textured, human-like surfaces. The exhibition is dominated by powerful portraits of women, embodying resilience and community. This mirrors diaspora experiences, inviting attendees into a recreated home, bridging Boafo’s origins and the present.

The exhibition is open at Roberts Projects, Los Angeles, through March 21.
