Underwater Photographer Aids in Saving Humpback Whale Caught in Fishing Equipment

Underwater photographer John Kowitz has traveled the world to unveil the enchanting underwater realm through his camera. His work, featured on platforms like Instagram and his personal website, showcases the magnificence of marine life and emphasizes species endangered by human actions, including commercial fishing and pollution.

During a recent expedition off the coast of Hawaii, Kowitz faced a scenario that illuminated these dangers when he observed two humpback whales, one ensnared by entangling lines and chains. Utilizing his drone, he captured this alarming sight—a whale dragging a significant amount of fishing gear embedded in its skin.

Acting promptly, the boat’s captain, adept in whale disentanglement, reached out to NOAA. Over the following hours, Kowitz and his crew compiled extensive documentation to support the rescue mission. Although they had to depart before the operation reached its conclusion, the disentanglement team managed to extract hundreds of feet of debris from the whale, liberating it from its agonizing burden.

Kowitz discovered that this equipment came from fisheries in Alaska, suggesting the whale’s long and painful journey to Hawaii. While relieved to contribute to the whale’s rescue, Kowitz voiced his sadness over the ongoing effects of commercial fishing on marine life. His experience underscores the significance of ocean conservation initiatives, calling for greater awareness regarding the dangers faced by such magnificent beings.
