Discover ‘Ponyo’s Magical Undersea Realm at L.A.’s Academy Museum’
At the Academy Museum in Los Angeles, guests can delve into the magical realm of Hayao Miyazaki’s 2008 jewel, “Ponyo,” through an engaging exhibition that provides an in-depth exploration of the film’s development and motifs. This exhibition, running until January 10, 2027, assembles over 100 carefully curated artifacts, presenting a thorough insight into the charm of Miyazaki’s cherished movie.
“Studio Ghibli’s ‘Ponyo’” features an extensive array of art boards, promotional materials, and original hand-crafted illustrations by Miyazaki, showcasing the animation studio’s commitment to classical artistry. Attendees can interact with installations like an animation workstation where they can craft their own sequences utilizing Studio Ghibli-designed sea creature cut-outs. A space adorned with walls mimicking flowing waves and a movable Ponyo figure enchants visitors, together with a replica of Sosuke’s legendary green bucket, inviting both children and adults to immerse themselves in the narrative.
Curator Jessica Niebel highlights the film’s reflective essence, echoing Ponyo’s mystical and serene universe. Crafted to engage audiences of every age, the exhibition honors themes of friendship, curiosity, and bravery—reflecting Miyazaki’s inspiration drawn from Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid.”
The choice by Studio Ghibli to hand-draw each frame of “Ponyo,” steering clear of digital animation, is underscored throughout the exhibition. Miyazaki’s distinctive method, which avoids straight lines in favor of natural forms, is apparent in the displayed animation cells and artwork, much of which is being exhibited outside Japan for the first time.
The exhibition commemorates the artist’s vision, encapsulating the heart of Miyazaki’s narrative style. Emily Rauber Rodriguez, the museum’s assistant curator, points out the significance of Miyazaki’s diligent refinements, which transform characters with simple, understated adjustments, highlighting the strength and allure of hand-drawn animation.
