“Drone Display Lights Up Los Angeles Skyline to Commemorate LACMA’s New David Geffen Galleries”
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) marked the debut of the David Geffen Galleries with a glamorous gala, ushering in a new era for its permanent collection. The event was filled with Hollywood stars, but the centerpiece was an awe-inspiring light display created by DRIFT, which utilized 1,000 drones in a captivating performance above the newly constructed building designed by Peter Zumthor.
Entitled “Franchise Freedom,” this art installation premiered at Art Basel in 2017 and has since emerged as a hallmark work for DRIFT. Distinct from conventional fixed image presentations, it operates based on a biological algorithm derived from starling murmurations, ensuring that each display is distinct and unpredictable. Choreographed by DRIFT co-founders Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta, the artwork explores the relationship between humanity, nature, and technology.
After more than twenty years of research into the behavior of starling swarms, “Franchise Freedom” transforms the nighttime sky into a lively tapestry of motion and light, encouraging discourse between nature and technology. DRIFT characterizes this performance as an expression of democratic space defined by equality and shared experience.
The drone display elegantly adorned the museum’s new architecture, engaging in a dazzling dialogue with the LACMA complex along the renowned Wilshire Boulevard. The occasion underscored the fusion of art and technology while commemorating the launch of the David Geffen Galleries, a pivotal cultural enhancement for Los Angeles.
