“Day Zero Festival Highlights Music and Art in the Mayan Jungle”

On December 21, 2012, numerous individuals globally experienced heightened anticipation. A misunderstanding related to the Mayan calendar appeared to forecast the world’s end on this date. (Ultimately, it marked merely the commencement of a new epoch.) Motivated by both the apocalyptic commotion and the sense of renewal linked to the date, DJ Damian Lazarus hosted a celebration in the very Mayan jungle from which the prophecy originated. Thus, [Day Zero Festival](https://dayzerofestival.com/) was established.

Now, almost 14 years later, Day Zero has evolved into one of the most thrilling electronic music festivals worldwide. While many similar festivals gained prominence due to their lineups, this is not what defines the essence of Day Zero. For them, it’s fundamentally about providing top-notch raving that prioritizes sustainability, artistry, and cultural exchange.

“The Day Zero experience is founded on the principles of immersion and cultural connectivity, coexisting between the ancient world and contemporary humanity,” states the festival on its site. “From dusk till dawn, every instant is intertwined within the venue’s vibrant atmosphere. This bond with the surroundings and oneself has contributed to establishing the perfect setting for enjoying the finest electronic music on the planet.”

To begin with, it features three stunning locations around the globe: Tulum, Mexico; Bali, Indonesia; and Milagres, Brazil. Devoted to ensuring the area is left in better condition than it was found, the festival recruits industry experts to rehabilitate the green spaces afterwards, a consideration often overlooked by most music festivals worldwide. Nevertheless, they acknowledge the difficulties in motivating attendees to take similar care in preserving the environment.

Among the measures to safeguard the regions where the festival occurs are waste management and reduction, alongside onsite recycling and a comprehensive tracking system for the recycling process and post-event restoration. In Tulum, they have partnered with local conservation organizations, and since 2022 they have collaborated with Petgas to convert plastic into fuel, which they plan to use for festival generators.

“All of us have witnessed the catastrophic consequences of human activity on this planet. As an events industry, we have reached a critical juncture,” Day Zero emphasizes. “Every event we plan creates a significant impact on the Earth. It is time to take action. It is time to ensure our experience does not negatively affect the world. We must actively seek to educate and motivate our audience.”

While Day Zero 2026 has concluded, you can continue to participate in the experience in 2027. To keep updated on the festival, you can follow [Day Zero on Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/dayzerofestival).
