Before Coachella ascended to the pinnacle of trendy music festivals for Gen Z, its roster appeared markedly different. It was once the stage for the most prominent rock and indie acts of the early 2000s, with some innovative electronic and hip-hop artists intermittently featured. This essence seemingly resurfaced at Coachella on Friday night when artist Moby delivered one of the festival’s standout moments with a thrilling rendition of his 2000s classic \u201cNatural Blues.\u201d<\/p>\n
The track prominently incorporates samples from \u201cTrouble So Hard\u201d by the late American folk artist Vera Hall. To infuse the Coachella performance with similar depth and vigor, Moby invited singer Jacob Lusk to join him. The artist, a member of the group Gabriels and a fifth-place finisher on the 10th season of American Idol, enriched the vocal segments of the song with his deep, captivating voice. Instead of the original, more subdued version of the piece, Moby opted for the 2019 BLOND:ISH remix of \u201cNatural Blues,\u201d transforming the Mojave Stage into a complete reverie.<\/p>\n
This collaboration wasn\u2019t the first for the duo. Lusk had previously performed with Moby on stage, presenting their reimagined take on \u201cWhen It\u2019s Cold I\u2019d Like To Die,\u201d which was released earlier this year and led to a remix album featuring a dozen diverse interpretations. \u201cThis new version of \u2018When It\u2019s Cold I\u2019d Like to Die\u2019 with Jacob Lusk from Gabriels is just so beautiful,\u201d Moby shared on social media. \u201cI first heard Jacob sing a few years back and immediately fell in love with his voice.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lusk, who captivated the Coachella audience like the legendary singers of the past, reflected on the response to the moment on Instagram: \u201cCompletely overwhelmed by all the kindness I\u2019ve received over the last few days. Huge thanks to Mr. Moby, the entire band and crew for allowing me to sing with you all. This past weekend Coachella was something special. There was a profound sense of love in that tent and on that stage. I\u2019ve often felt isolated, anxious, or out of place. These last few days have reminded me there\u2019s a place for everyone, including me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Regarding Moby, he has declared that he will donate 100% of his earnings from the Coachella performance to animal rights organizations, a cause he has passionately supported since the start of his career. \u201cMy primary role in life is as an animal rights activist,\u201d Moby stated, \u201cand my aim is to leverage the revenue and visibility from my Coachella appearance to highlight and financially assist animal rights organizations.\u201d<\/p>\n
